Harley Ride to Alaska

Touring Fairbanks

Touring Fairbanks--While George worked, I played tourist. I obtained a map from the Vista Travel Agency to identify places of interest here. First, I toured a University of Alaska research farm and learned about the work they're doing with muskoxen, reindeer, and caribou.

Next, I went to the University campus and spent several hours in their fantastic museum. One of the most interesting exhibits was a mummified pre-historic bison which had been discovered after 36,000 thousand years of being frozen in the ice.

Standing in front of a grizzily bear that was almost nine feet tall made me feel very small. Also, as I stood there, I felt all desire to go tent camping in the Alaskan mountains depart from me.

Then, I rode north of town to where the Alaska oil pipeline crosses this area. Finally, I rode south to North Pole, Alaska, to visit the home of Santa Claus. In the evening, I fell into bed totally exhausted, but very serene.
